Welcome! I am 16 years old and a sophomore at Atlantic Collegiate Academy.
As a sophomore in high school who is just coming back to in person school since the 8th grade, I can say that I have learned so much more this past semester than I did in the 2 years I was home-schooled. This semester has truly changed how I view writing an essay and the ways I approach an essay. When I begin an essay, I will normally start by taking notes on what I'm writing about so I can get a better understanding. Then I will start writing the first draft of my essay which is never very grammatically correct. Lastly, I will wait a day or two and go back and edit everything and make sure it fits the criteria. By doing this, I grasp a better understanding of the topic I am discussing. I have learned that when you start an essay you need to come to it with an open mind to all the ways the topics could be discussed. For instance, if I went into my comparative analysis with my mind leaning heavily towards one side, it wouldn't be a very good essay because there is only a negative comparison. I also have learned how important formatting and professionalism is when writing an informative essay. I received tons of revisions from my teacher telling me how though my essay was decent, the formatting was wrong, and it cost me points on the grade of the essay. This taught me to double-check the requirements and make sure I meet all the criteria that is needed. I have also learned how to use my rhetorical choices correctly. When you include your audience and evidence correctly, it makes such a big difference in the overall outcome of the essay. In my research essay I knew that my essay was intended for athletes and people in sports medicine. This helped me connect well with the audience and allowed my analysis to connect better because it was approachable. In this portfolio you will see me discuss the risks vs rewards of technology advancing, reflection on a book that shaped my literary journey, analyze what technology is doing to us as a society, and lastly inform what proper sports nutrition can do for an athlete. I hope you enjoy reading these works as much as I enjoyed writing them.
These are my two short writing assignments that I have reflected on.
